Fayette County is located south of Atlanta and contains almost 200 square miles. Up until the late 1970's Fayette County was mainly agricultural and maintained a slow growth. Today however Fayette County is listed as the seventh fastest growing county in the United States and development is exploding.
There are a variety of housing options available in Fayette County with a wide range of prices. You can find a home for as low as $100,000 or as high as well over a $1,000,000 however the median price range is in the $180,000's. Peachtree City is one area to choose from in Fayette County. It is the County's youngest and largest city. Peachtree City has the nation's lowest crime rate with a population of more than 20,000 and the distinction of having the South's highest per capita ownership of golf carts.
Fayette County's school system has a consolidated system with 20 schools. The school system is often referred to as the chief reason for the County's extraordinary growth. Voters in 1984 approved a $14 million bond issue; in 1988 they approved an additional $27.5 million; and in 1994 another $35 million. Growth in the total tax digest has made the millage increases minimal. As for test scores, students score 54 points higher than the state average in SAT scores. 90% of high school students attend a post-secondary program.
