State Sales tax in Georgia varies by county. In the Atlanta Metropolitan Area the sales tax ranges from 5% to 7%.
Residential property tax calculations contain three essential elements:
1. Fair Market Value - determined by the tax assessor, which is assessed at 40%
2. Standard Homestead Exemption - available to resident homeowners, subtracted from the assessment, which applies to certain portions of the tax bill (additional exemptions may apply to senior citizens, veterans and the disabled - and each county has a deadline for filing this exemption).
3. Millage Rates - set by the counties, schoold boards and cities. A mill is equal to a dollar for each $1,000 of assessed value minus any expemptions.
